William (Bill) M. Berry, Operating Partner - Specialty Distribution & Business Services
Mr. Berry has more than 35 years’ experience as a senior executive in soft drink distribution and automotive aftermarket distribution and 20 years of experience working for private equity sponsors. From 1980 to 1984, Mr. Berry served as a controller and VP of Finance at Dr. Pepper in one of the Company’s bottling and distribution operations. In late 1984, Mr. Berry joined Interstate Tire Company (a predecessor of ATD) as corporate controller and began his career in automotive distribution. While at Interstate Tire, Mr. Berry helped lead the Company as it began to expand from 5 locations and $50 million in annual sales to $250 million in annual sales and 30 locations by 1995. During that time, Mr. Berry was promoted to CFO and helped facilitate the sale of the Company to Wingate Capital Partners in 1995 which was the first time private equity invested in the tire distribution industry. In 1998, Interstate Tire Company merged with the J. H. Heafner Company to form a $500 million regional tire distributor with 45 locations post-merger integration. In 1999, CharlesBank Captial Partners acquired the Company and Mr. Berry was promoted to CFO in 2001. In 2001, the Company changed its name to American Tire Distributors (ATD) to reflect the stated objective of becoming the first national tire distributor in the US. From 2001 to 2003, the Company grew through acquisitions and Mr. Berry was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2003 where he served in that position until the beginning of 2009. In 2005, ATD was sold to Investcorp and by the end of 2008 had revenues of $1.9 billion. At the beginning of 2009, Mr. Berry was named CEO of ATD and served in that position until his retirement at the end of 2015. in 2010, TPG purchased the Company. From 2009 until his retirement at the end of 2015, ATD grew from $1.9 billion in sales to over $5 billion in sales including a 2012 expansion in Canada while more than tripling the Company’s EBITDA performance. In early 2015, Ares Management acquired 46.7% of the Company from TPG. Today ATD is the largest tire distributor in the US and Canada serving some 80,000 customers daily with the largest selection of tire and tire related products through more than 140 locations. Mr. Berry began his career as a Certified Public Accountant after graduating from Virginia Tech in 1977.
